Unfortunately, Covid-19 has led to the cancellation of the majority of firework demonstrations across the state of Illinois. It has left a lot of us feeling sad, wondering what we will do to celebrate our America's Independence. Well, not Travis Hawkins and Matt Weaver. These two men came together in the beginning of June to start working towards ensuring that Shirland, IL and surrounding communities still have the opportunity to see brilliant, sparkling display of American Spirit. "Every one of us, deserve to see Fireworks. It is the Birth of our Great Nation," stated Hawkins.
Keep in mind that the town of Shirland has not had fireworks in twelve long years. However, Hawkins was able to hire a Licensed Pyro Technician. These two dedicated men also secured a Fireworks Permit and got approval from a local land owner to utilize his field for the show. However, firework are expensive, so logistics was only part of the puzzle. After the two began reaching out to their local community, business such as Ref's Bar & Grill, Sugar River Adventures, Ye Old Pub, Durand State Bank, Bufalo Contracting, and others started doing what they could to help out.
On June 7th, less than one month before the event date, a Facebook page for Shirland Fireworks was created. On July 16, only nine days later, it was announced that half of the $10,000 goal had been reached. It wasn't just area business that showed their supports, individuals made donation through drop off points, GoFundMe, and PayPal. In a world that currently seems divided, Hawkins and Weaver have brought together their surrounding communities to celebrate one thing we all have in common, we reside in this Great Nation.
Kegel Harley-Davidson will be leading a ride out to Shirland to support the cause and partake in the festivities. Registration will begin at 5 PM at "Simple Fuel" on Meridian rd and Rt 20. For further details, visit https://kegelmotorcycles.com/event/8489/fireworks-on-the-fifth.
Please keep in mind that there are still Covid restrictions. No large gatherings can happen, but feel free to watch from along side county roads with you friends and family in the comfort of your own car.
