110th Anniversary Look Back - Day 339

Today we share another article from the April 2001 edition of Kegel Motorcycle News titled "I'll Have Fries with that Softail ... Oh, and Maybe a Bar Stool, Too".

For bikers, Kegel Motorcycle brings new meaning to the term "one-stop shopping." Enthusiasts not only shop for new or used bikes, they also pick up the latest accessories, maybe a few parts, and then get their pride and joy serviced. And that's just for starters. Next they can browse though Kegel's exclusive "HomeGear" section that features artwork, glassware, mirrors, collectibles, and bar furniture - virtually everything to bring your motorcycle lifestyle home. Another Kegel exclusive is the 1,200 sq. ft. Kidzworld department, complete with youth helmets, Genuine Harley riding apparel, goggles, gloves, boots and everything else a kid could want, including skateboards, playhouses, school supplies and bicycle helmets. There's even a layette and maternity items to start even the littlest enthusiasts out right. After shoppers have worked up an appetite, they can top off their visit with a meal at Kegel's Diner. Adding to each visit is the fun of dealing with enthusiastic, friendly salespeople who know what they're talking about. When you combine all this with a location that's easy to reach, it's no wonder Kegel Motorcycle has become a popular destination.

"We've expanded our market area," Sheley said. "We pull customers from Chicago all way south to LaSalle Peru, and our market just keeps on growing."

The Kegel Diner is one of the reasons people stop by, since it's the only full-service diner in our area attached to a Harley dealership. "We serve all American diner cuisine, says Diner Manager Kathy Hanneman-Skarpac, "Burgers are our specialty, along with malts and apple pie. But we do serve a  variety of full meals as well. Everything on the menu is named after a motorcycle or motorcycle event. For instance, we call a small hamburger a 'sportser'. It's a fun menu."

The diner also caters food for special events like meetings and weddings - on or off premises - and works with clients to create whatever menu they want for the event.

A relatively new Kegel feature is aimed at area businesses that are looking for a special location for their off-site meetings. The dealership makes its HomeGear department available for small corporate meetings.

"We've had several corporations that have brought groups in to have meetings," Sheley explains. "Our HomeGear area is on the mezzanine overlooking the dealership, so while they're upstairs, they can watch business being done. Stairs lead to our diner, so we can also offer a buffet or catered meal. We even offer a group tour. Business are finding that a meeting here has a unique and exciting atmosphere."

With all it has to offer, it's no surprised Kegel Motorcycle Company has become the place for bikers to visit. "They like to call it a 'motorcycle oasis,' said Hanneman-Skarpac. "A lot of people will ride from other places because they knew they can make a day of it. They can have breakfast, wander around the showroom, come back to the diner and have coffee or lunch. They actually end up spend the whole day here."
